Wow, I just found out Mr. Bartlett has died. When I was in 8th grade I attended Edward J. Bartlett Middle School. I rememeber going into the office one day on an errand for one of my teachers and seeing this portrait hanging up and I realized there must be a Mr. Bartlett somewhere and I wanted to know why our school was named after him.
Well I plopped open the phonebook and sent him a letter not expecting to hear anything back. My thinking was if you were important enough to have a school named after you that meant you were a busy man and wouldn't have time for some 14 year old kid. Well he called me within a couple of days and we arranged for him to come talk to my Talent Pool class (which was our school's "gifted program") Well he talked about his life and his passions in life. He was such an open friendly man. It was so cool that this really important man took time out for us.
He also arranged a field trip for us. We went to Good Will Industries and took this tour and saw what an amazing thing they did for the community. He was such an amazing man and spend his time making Savannah a better place. I thought about his a lot over the years and I remember letting him know I was graduating from High School with Honors and he sent me a letter back and this cool stationary that had my name embroidared on it. I felt so grown up. Even though I didn't know him that well he was and will continue to be a role model.
