First Official Entry

I thought for my first entry I would explain the name of my blog. I thought for a long time about what I would name it. I couldn't come up with anything witty (like hardboiled or Moore Adventures in our Odyssey) so I decided to go with WIDE OPEN SPACES. In high school I loved the Dixie Chicks and "Wide Open Spaces" just seemed like my theme song. It was even on one of my yearbook pages. Here are the lyrics:

Who doesn't know what I'm talking about
Who's never left home, who's never struck out
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone
Many precede and many will follow
A young girl's dream no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out west
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed

[Chorus:] She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

She traveled this road as a child
Wide eyed and grinning, she never tired
But now she won't be coming back with the rest
If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test

[Repeat Chorus]

She knows the high stakes
As her folks drive away, her dad yells, "Check the oil!"
Mom stares out the window and says, "I'm leaving my girl"
She said, "It didn't seem like that long ago"
When she stood there and let her own folks know

[Repeat Chorus]

She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes
She knows the high stakes

It just fit me.

So as I have gone through this pregnancy I have slowly come back to listen to the Dixie Chicks (I know they got a lot of flack about the whole comment about Mr. President Bush but hey everyone has a right to their opinion, Freedom and speech and all that). I have put on their music and stuck the headphones on my belly and Lucas has kicked almost every time.

As I get ready to give birth I know I will make plenty of my own mistakes but I've got to learn to trust my instincts and not worry about what other people might think or say. This song fit my life as I was leaving school, choosing a major, and moving out of my parents house and getting married. It still fits as I have to figure out what kind of parent I will be... So that is why I named my blog Wide Open Spaces.
